About Me

Hi my name is Lok and I am a Candidate for the Masters of Medicine (Perioperative Medicine) Monash University. I am a Junior Doctor, with experience in General Surgery, Emergency Medicine, Intensive care and Anesthesia. For my final assignment, I have decided to make a website to teach Perioperative Medicine to medical students and junior doctors (PGY 1 and PGY2).

Why have I decided to make this website?

I enjoy teaching and sharing my knowledge. I am also influenced by the #Free Open Access Medical Education (FOAM) Movement, which seeks to provide free up to date medical knowledge through various mediums (websites, podcasts, videos etc). In particular, I am an avid reader of the Emergency Medicine blog ‘Life in the Fast Lane’.

I feel strongly that medical knowledge should be shared freely, so that by having better educated doctors, in the end patients benefit. Whilst Perioperative Medicine, as a field has existed for a number of years, there are no FOAM equivalent resources.

How can I best use this website?

This website is very much an introduction to Perioperative Medicine, specifically aimed at medical students and junior doctors (PGY1 and PGY2). I have designed this website, through the ‘lense’ of an Intern.

This means that the information presented centers around the question of:

‘If I was an Intern, starting out on my first surgical rotation, what do I need to know?’

It is my wish, that this website does not come across as being a ‘didactic’ textbook reading experience. As such, my aim is to present content that is useful to the day to day medical practice of junior doctors.
